What is dissolution recycling?
Dissolution recycling is a physical process that enables the recycling of polypropylene (PP) – a thermoplastic polymer that is widely used in the packaging industry – from food and beverage packaging into industrial and consumer goods packaging.
The biggest challenge in recycling PP from post-consumer waste is contamination. PP is often found in composite packaging together with other materials, which complicates the sorting and recycling processes. Conventional technologies such as mechanical recycling often lead to a decrease in material quality with each recycling cycle.
PureCycle uses an innovative and disruptive form of dissolution recycling developed and patented by The Procter & Gamble Company. PureCycle transforms polypropylene (PP) plastic into a versatile, replenishable resource through a unique purification process, involving seven crucial steps. The result is an ultra-pure recycled (UPR) resin that acts similar to virgin PP. PureCycle’s PureFive™ resin can be recycled and reused multiple times, changing our relationship with plastic.
Together, in collaboration with PureCycle Belgium, we want to enable the advanced recycling of PP waste in Europe.

How we enable the recycling of PP waste in Europe
In January 2024, Landbell Group and PureCycle Belgium began working toward enabling the advanced recycling of PP waste in Europe. The aim of the collaborationis to ensure the upcycling of PP waste into high-purity, recycled PP that can be used in high-value and demanding applications.
As part of this collaboration, Landbell Group will use its expertise in the collection, sorting and processing of plastics in several European countries. PureCycle Belgium will be using its innovative form of dissolution recyclingand experience from its flagship plant in Ironton, Ohio, USA, which is expected to have an annual capacity of 48.,600 tonnes,.The high-purity recycled PP is already being used in commercial applications.
Landbell will supply the PP waste from its household collections to PureCycle’s first European PP recycling plant in Antwerp, Belgium, with an expected annual capacity of 59,000 tonnes.
