Landbell and SABIC have signed a long-term cooperation agreement

Landbell Group, leading provider for compliance solutions and global operator of more than 40 takeback schemes, and SABIC, a global leader in diversified chemicals, have signed a long-term cooperation agreement to further combine the specific expertise of each partner to drive toward more close loops systems for plastic packaging. The parties will work closely together on establishing and further developing innovative processes to increase feedstock streams, technology and know-how to scale-up advanced recycling operations.

The parties first joined forces back in 2020 to jointly develop innovative circular economy solutions. The new agreement builds on the success of the pioneering recycling project that Landbell and SABIC announced back in 2022 with Mars, to demonstrate closing the loop on flexible packaging. Mixed used plastic was collected by Landbell and used to produce certified circular polypropylene (PP) as part of SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE™ portfolio.

Landbell and SABIC now want to encourage other brand owners as well as plastic and packaging converters to be able to incorporate circular solutions from advanced recycled post-consumer plastic packaging into their product applications. Once a downstream value chain partner is also involved in this new model, the collaboration aims to show that closed loop projects have the potential to capture the value and bring back used plastic into new material streams.

In the collaboration, Landbell is suppling mixed plastic packaging waste from the yellow bag collection as raw material for advanced recycling. This packaging waste has historically been sent for low-end mechanical recycling or incineration for energy recovery. In a specialized pre-treatment plant, operated by A. Siemer Entsorgung, further sorting and cleaning processes ensure that the mixed plastic waste is prepared for the advanced recycling process. The packaging waste will then be supplied to the SABIC Plastic Energy Advanced Recycling Unit (currently in the final stages of construction) as raw material to produce a feedstock that SABIC can use in its production process, replacing virgin feedstock, to produce SABIC’s  high-quality circular polymers for applications such as food contact packaging and other high-end applications.

The common goal of Landbell and SABIC is to combine the strengths of both companies to develop an economical and sustainable value chain for used plastic packaging and further grow the volumes of advanced recycled plastics.
